BISNISREAL.COM, DEPOK – Sunday (27/10/2024) In this global era, the increasing use of technology in education, especially in special schools (Sekolah Luar Biasa/SLB), is inevitable. Observations at SLB BC Budi Lestari in Depok reveal that technology has become a trend in education, serving as an essential source of information through communication and information technology. This is in line with Law No. 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities, which defines persons with disabilities as individuals experiencing long-term physical, intellectual, mental, and/or sensory limitations. These limitations, when interacting with the environment, may hinder their ability to participate fully and effectively with others on an equal basis.
This is further supported by the implementation of Law No. 24 of 2014 on Law No. 43 of 2007, which states that infrastructure must meet technological, construction, ergonomic, efficiency, and effectiveness standards. Utilizing technology in education enriches the information provided and supports the application of effective learning strategies, particularly for students with special needs at Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB), by integrating various learning resources into differentiated instruction.
Aam Amalia, S.Pd. Gr, a practitioner and educator, emphasized that the use of technology in the learning process, especially under the Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum), is crucial for SLB. Tools such as computers, laptops, Chromebooks, and LCD projectors are essential in enhancing learning. For example, these technologies can be used for word processing, data analysis, graphic creation, database management, and administrative tasks. This helps not only students but also teachers and staff in managing school data such as personnel and financial records, according to Amalia.
She explained that the use of technology in teaching is highly effective, as students with special needs have also become accustomed to technology. Incorporating technology into lessons makes learning more engaging for these students, sparking curiosity and increasing their focus on the material presented. Platforms like computers and laptops are integral to face-to-face learning, Amalia added in her interview with Bisnisreal.com on the same day (27/10).
In online education, platforms such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, and Zoom are commonly used. Technology provides students with broader access to information beyond just books and printed media. It also enhances learning capabilities, as the information available online is more up-to-date, allowing students to easily access current educational materials under teacher supervision. Furthermore, technology increases students’ motivation to learn due to the ease of access and availability of information, which stimulates greater interest in lessons, Amalia noted amidst her busy schedule as an educator.
Educational technology plays a vital role in the learning process. It simplifies the teaching process, allowing educators to transfer information more effectively, while students can grasp the material more easily. It is crucial for educators to understand how to properly implement educational technology to ensure its effectiveness in the classroom, particularly for students with special needs at Sekolah Luar Biasa, Amalia concluded.
